NAIDOC WEEK

Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

Next week Australia celebrates NAIDOC Week which is usually celebrated in the July school holidays.  This year we will be able to celebrate the wonderful traditions and culture of our First Nations people especially the Ngarrindjeri people at school.

The theme for this year is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! Which recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.  They are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. St Joseph’s will celebrate through our Community Prayer on Friday at 3pm and on Monday a number of our Indigenous students will participate in the Murray Bridge – Bridge Walk to the Local Government Centre for the NAIDOC Week awards ceremonies.  We will also fly the Ngarrindjeri flag for the week and students will be taking part in a colouring competition.

I would like to share with you information posted on the NAIDOC website in regards to this year’s NAIDOC Week theme.

“We have a proud history of getting up, standing up, and showing up.

From the frontier wars and our earliest resistance fighters to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities fighting for change today—we continue to show up.

Now is our time. We cannot afford to lose momentum for change.

We all must continue to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for systemic change and keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities.

Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protections, Constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism—we must do it together.

It must be a genuine commitment by all of us to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.

It’s also time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities over generations—they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights.

Getting Up, Standing Up, and Showing Up can take many forms.

We need to move beyond just acknowledgement, good intentions, empty words and promises, and hollow commitments. Enough is enough.

The relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights.

Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! with us to amplify our voices and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.

Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!”

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome to Week Nine!  Amazingly, we are halfway through the school year already.  It has been a fascinating, busy and challenging first six months in so many ways.  I thank parents, caregivers, students and the staff for their commitment to our outstanding school.

For those who have had the opportunity to visit inside the school gates, you will notice that the new Middle Years school building is named Tenison Woods (pictured above).   Fr Julian Julian Tenison Woods was a devoted priest and geologist who was very active in Australia during the 1800s.  He shared a common goal with Saint Mary MacKillop to help poor and disadvantaged children.  Together, they started the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph at Penola in 1866.  Father Julian Tenison Woods had a great idea and vision to create a Catholic Education system demonstrating innovation, curiosity, leadership, and entrepreneurship - thinking outside the square.  One of Fr Tenison Wood's main interests was science and geology.  He loved to study the environment, fossils, sea, and animals.  Fr Julian died in October 1889.

The naming of the Middle Years building considers many of these attributes.  It will inspire and drive our vision of students in the future by using all the facilities, especially the modern and well-equipped Science Laboratory and classrooms.

Next Friday, the staff and I will have our second Professional Learning and Religious Education Formation Day for the year, a pupil-free day for the students to conclude the term.  The professional learning for the staff is in Adelaide.  Together we will be learning from an esteemed Josephite nun, Sister Mary Cresp and Ms Lucia Ciocca about Father Julian Tenison Woods, his legacy and the historical connection to the Josephite Sisters.

Early Term 3, we will invite the community to join us for an Open Day and tour of our Tenison Woods building, renovated classrooms and upgraded landscape and play areas.  Dates and times will be announced in the next newsletter.

Mobile Phones and Smartwatches

In my first newsletter of the year, I referenced the St Joseph's School Murray Bridge Years Reception to Year 9 – Communication Device Guidelines.  This guide has clear instructions and permission about the use of mobile phones and smartwatches.  In recent weeks there have been breaches of this policy by several students.

I ask that parents read the attached guidelines carefully and indicate by the survey link below if your child/ren has permission to store a mobile phone in their bags throughout the day and only to be used off the school site.  If consent is not received via the survey or email to the Principal, and your child is found using a device at school, this device will be confiscated as per the instructions in the guidelines.  A reminder that students are encouraged to keep their devices with the administration office for complete security throughout the day.

School Reports

On Wednesday, July 6, student reports will be sent to families via email.  Please be aware of many grade decisions that your child's teacher may have made if there have been significant student absences this Semester due to illness.

This report informs parents of their child's progress at school and is based on the results of formal testing, assignments, set tasks, work samples, class activities and daily observations.  The report is one of several ways in which parents can monitor their child's progress throughout the year.  Parent/Teacher meetings and informal communication between the teacher and parent should ensure that parents are kept fully informed about academic performance and spiritual, personal, physical and social development.  Through the report, teachers also comment on the student's behaviour.

When students begin a new year level, it is important to remember they are working towards a new achievement standard from the Australian Curriculum.  This means a lot of new learning for students and a big step up from the previous year.  Students are supposed to reach the achievement standard by the end of the year.  They are continually working towards this standard, meaning they may still be developing by Semester One report grades.  However, students have the rest of the year to work towards the achievement standard.  Please ensure you discuss the report with your child, highlighting the positives and things they need to work on.  If you have any concerns, please see your classroom teacher.

I want to thank the teachers for their time, professionalism and commitment to writing these reports.

Staffing Announcements

Mrs Gabby Merritt and Mrs Penny McClure have resigned from their perspective positions as of the end of Term 2, 2022 and we wish them well in their new endeavours.

Mrs Debbie Driver has reduced her teaching load to three days per week and will be teaching with Mrs Robyn Coulter in the Year 3 classroom for Semester 2.  I am pleased to share that Miss Caitlin O'Brien, who currently teaches the Year 2 class, will remain full-time in this class for the remainder of the year.

Student Leadership

At the last School Board meeting, the new Student Leadership Policy and Guidelines were approved.  The Middle Year students from Years 7 and 8 are working through the application process for our Senior Student Captains.  In 2022/23, the successful candidates and two reserves will hold the Senior School Captain positions for 18 months due to our Year 9 students starting in 2023.  At the end of 2023, there will be an election and announcement at Graduation for the 2024 Senior School captains, and they will hold this position for the next 12 months.  The successful candidates for 2022/23 will be announced at a short assembly on the last day of this term, 3 pm, Thursday, July 7, and via our school Seesaw page.

Student Voice Council (SVC) will commence Week 1 of Term 3.  Two representatives from each class are selected via an application process to hold the position of SVC for Semester 2.  The Student Voice Council group will learn about leadership strategies fortnightly, discuss classroom feedback and put forward ideas for school activities.

Last Day of Term

The school will conclude for Term 2 on Thursday, July 7, at 3.20 pm and resume for Term 3 on Monday, July 25 at 8.30 am.

Updating Personal Details Have your details changed?  If any details about your child/ren have changed, can you please update these details by emailing the school at michael.gates@stjomb.catholic.edu.au.  For example, has your phone number changed?  Has your address changed?  Have your emergency contact details changed?  Please update our administration office immediately if your child's medical information changes.  This is critical so that we can keep your child safe.

Every rock, every leaf, every insect, has something beautiful, nay, wonderful to tell.

ONLINE COMMUNICATIONS

St Joseph's School uses two leading online platforms for teachers and parents to communicate.   These are Seesaw and Microsoft Teams

Facebook has minimal use due to cybersafety considerations and is only utilised for information and celebration events.  For Administrative purposes, we also use email and distribute the fortnightly newsletter through SchoolStream.
In preparation for any extraordinary circumstances and essential information, parents must inform classroom teachers if they cannot access Seesaw or are not receiving the school newsletter fortnightly via email or SchoolStream.

CAR PARKING AT ST JOSEPH'S SCHOOL

Kiss and drop of students in cars remains on McHenry Street ONLY.  Florence Street school entrance is open, and we are waiting for the Murray Bridge Council to change the parking signs on both sides of the road.  There is no longer a kiss and drop.  Parents are permitted to park cars on both sides of the road and utilise the road crossing to enter the school.  Please be careful walking on the path nearest the front entrance door to the administration building.  A new retaining wall and the completion of the paving are happening over the coming weeks.
